Safari Description

This Namibian adventure is one of the most memorable African safaris we offer, and includes a drive into Sossusvlei, a visit to the NamibRand Nature Reserve and a unique opportunity to experience the mystique and splendour of the 'Sperrgebiet' - the forbidden Diamond Area situated on the far south-west coast of Namibia. From there the safari continues along the Skeleton Coast via Spencer Bay to the Huab Valley and up the coast as far as the Hoarusib Valley. The tour then reaches the Kunene River, and ends in Windhoek, Namibia's vibrant capital.

Itinerary

Day 1: Windhoek, Sossusvlei and NamibRand Nature Reserve.
We meet at Eros Airport in Windhoek for an early morning flight to Sossusvlei in the Namib Naukluft Park. Sossusvlei is reputed to have the highest dunes in the world, and the view of the shadow-lined dunes from the air is breathtaking. We land at Sesriem and enjoy a thrilling 4x4 drive into the dunes. The dunes reach heights of 300m or more, and offer a memorable challenge for those wanting to climb them. After our excursion at Sossusvlei, we fly to the Wolwedans Dune Camp or a similar camping alternative in the NamibRand Nature Reserve where we stay for two nights. An afternoon drive through the nature reserve concludes the first day of this beautiful Namibian safari. Your pilot-guide will arrange for a light picnic lunch to be served during the day.

Day 2: Luderitz, Skeleton Coast.
We fly to Luderitz for a day-long Elizabeth Bay safari, which includes the old ghost town relics and mining plants of the early German pioneers at Kolmanskop, the forbidden coast and a fur seal colony. The flight from Luderitz during the late afternoon passes over Spencer Bay, with its picturesque Otavi shipwreck, seals basking on the rocky slopes, as well as penguins and other birdlife. This is one of the most desolate and compelling parts of the Skeleton Coast.

Day 3: Swakopmund, Skeleton Coast, Cape Cross, Huab River.
The flight from Wolwedans (or alternative camp) to Swakopmund includes an aerial view of the famous Eduard Bohlen shipwreck at Conception Bay - a must-see on any African holidays. After landing and refuelling at Swakopmund, we fly north along the Skeleton Coast past the seal colony at Cape Cross for a light picnic lunch near the beach. After this, we fly east over the desert to the Ugab formations - a nearly lifeless 'moon landscape' of numerous black ridges that stand out in stark contrast to the white desert floor. We then land at our Kuidas camp in the Huab River Valley, where we stay for the night. Ancient rock engravings are found on the rocks within walking distance of the camp.

Day 4: Huab River, Terrace Bay, Hoarusib Valley.
After breakfast we take a drive to see the colourful red lava and yellow sandstone of the Huab River landscape and explore the area's wide diversity of flora and fauna. This includes the Welwitschia Mirabilis, a tree that has been dwarfed by the rigours of the encroaching desert climate. We make lunch at Kuidas Camp before flying along the coast to Terrace Bay in the Skeleton Coast Park. The most prominent shipwrecks along this part of the coast are the Montrose and Henrietta. At the coast, we drive along the roaring dunes, which is a highly memorable experience. We also visit the beach with its profusion of multi-coloured pebbles consisting of agate, lava, granite and quartz, as well as old bleached whale bones which are scattered along the beach above the high tide mark. We then continue our Namibian safari north to our Purros camp in the Hoarusib Valley in the Kunene Region, where we stay for the night.

Day 5: Hoarusib Valley, Skeleton Coast, Hartmann Valley, Kunene River
After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we take a scenic drive along the Hoarusib Valley to visit a Himba settlement. We might even come across the elusive desert elephant that frequents this valley. From here, your Namibian travel adventure continues north along the Skeleton Coast by aircraft to the Kunene River which borders Angola. The Kaiu Maru shipwreck and pieces from old sailing vessels lie scattered along this part of the coast. After landing, we take a scenic drive to a spectacular lunch site and then continue through the mountains and dunes of the Hartmann Valley, reaching our Kunene River camp in the late afternoon.

Day 6: Kunene River, Windhoek
The final day of the Namibian travel safari starts with an early morning boat trip on the Kunene River as it flows through scenic desert landscapes, observing an array of bird life and possibly some crocodiles. After lunch at camp, we fly back to Eros Airport in Windhoek, arriving in the late afternoon. For a magical and unforgettable exploration into Namibia's vast deserts and beautiful coastlines, these African travel packages should not be missed!
