UGANDA
'The Pearl of Africa' according to Winston Churchill, Uganda represents one of the most beautiful and hospitable countries in Africa according to travellers. The capital, Kampala, is situated on hills on the northern edge of Lake Victoria, while the neighbouring town of Jinja is built over the outlet from said lake and renowned as the source of the River Nile. At this location the Nile offers some spectacular white water, perfect for those who like to crank up the adrenaline.
The landscape of Uganda to the west, along the border with the DRC, is dominated by high mountain ranges - the Ruwenzoris (Ptolemy's "Mountains of the Moon"). These are suitably spectacular, as are the regions to the north of Kampala, around the Murchison Falls. The Rwenzori National Park is home to one of the highest concentrations of primates on the planet, which includes the spectacular mountain gorilla - one of the most elusive animals on earth. Those who would like to get up close and personal with these fearsome creatures should head to Rwenzori National Park for the experience of a lifetime.
The 'Idi Amin' days have thankfully long since ended and Uganda in the late 1980's and early 90's was a place of improvement and regeneration. Despite having endured tremendous hardship at the hands of the late dictator who died in exile in 2003, Ugandans remain a kind and hospitable people who are more than happy to welcome foreigners to their recovering country. Roads and buildings have been (or are being) rebuilt, and the economy is slowly re-asserting itself. The tourist industry is still small but growing, game parks are being restocked, and services in Kampala and around the country are being improved.
